Last Monday, I went to my favorite bookshop, Junkodo, with JM and discovered an entire corner I hadn't explore before. The shelves were full of erotic (and more) mangas with stories about 2 men getting off with each others. There were shelves and shelves full of them. Identical story but with all possible variations: 2 guys first hate each others than fall in love or 2 friends who become lovers, in modern times, in old times, in Japan, abroad, etc. Here most of the mangas are wrapped in plastic transparent film so you can't actually read them in the shop (not talking about 2nd hand bookshop) but there is always a way to fold it a bit to see inside. I'm used to do this to check if the manga has furagana or not (hiragana next to the kanjis). I must admit, the drawing and storyline seemed to be pretty basic. Initially I thought it was for the gay audience so I was pretty surprised to hear that, actually, these mangas are for women! Yes, it seems that seeing 2 men getting off with each others is very exciting?! Apparently, it's an extremely popular genre here but I've got problems getting my head around it.
Another dark side of mangas I discovered talking with JM, is that there were lots of them with erotic/porn stories involving schoolgirls, sometimes at the limit of pedophilia. It seems that a law was voted not long ago to regulate this kind of mangas. The publishers aren't very happy because they were a good source of income and publishers even boycotted a manga festival to voice their discontentment.
Strange, strange, strange....
